Chelsea Overtake Manchester United
Chelsea have overtaken Manchester United in the race to sign Atletico Madrid midfielder Saul Niguez, according to reports.
The Spanish champions have put both Chelsea and United on alert after deciding to allow Saul to leave the club before the end of the transfer window.
Atletico are open to letting Saul leave the club on loan for the season and include an option to buy as part of the deal.
Earlier this week, reports in Spain claimed that United were ahead of Chelsea in their efforts to sign Saul, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer keen on recruiting a new central midfielder.
But according to The Telegraph, Chelsea have entered negotiations with Atletico and are exploring a similar deal to the one they agreed for Mateo Kovacic, who initially joined on a one-year loan from Real Madrid before his move was made permanent for a £40 million fee.
The report claims that Chelsea view Saul as a player who can provide competition for Kovacic, N’Golo Kante and Jorginho but the deal depends on the European champions’ ability to offload Ross Barkley, Tiemoue Bakayoko and Danny Drinkwater.
