Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea is determined to stay at Old Trafford this summer and still plans to retain his spot in the starting lineup.

Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has a decision to make this summer when it comes to his goalkeeper. De Gea is the club’s top earner but has been guilty of a few too many poor performances, but he has retained his spot in the squad ahead of young Dean Henderson – who will push for an exit if he is asked to remain on the bench.

United have also added another goalkeeper to the mix, striking a deal to bring former Aston Villa stopper Tom Heaton in on a free transfer, while veteran Lee Grant has also penned a new one-year deal to take the number of senior goalkeepers up to four.

There’s obviously a lot of competition for one spot in the squad now, but according to The Times, De Gea is not concerned and intends to stick around and fight for his place in Solskjaer’s starting lineup.

That current stance probably stems from the fact that Solskjaer is yet to make an actual decision about his goalkeepers, and the fact that no team on the planet would be willing to match De Gea’s £375,000-a-week wages.

Paris Saint-Germain were often named as suitors, but the French side are on the cusp of signing Gianluigi Donnarumma to his own bumper contract, so they will not be signing De Gea this summer.

If Solskjaer chooses to go with Henderson, who has made it abundantly clear that he’s going to be somebody’s starting goalkeeper next season, De Gea’s feelings may change. He’s already lost his spot in the Spain team and won’t get it back sat on the bench.

As for the other goalkeepers in the squad, Heaton is a high-level backup and it feels a lot like he has been brought in to be the number two, behind whichever of the senior stoppers stays at the club.

With Grant, he will remain a part of the squad, but it is believed that the 38-year-old’s focus is slowly turning to coaching and he is expected to spend more time working with the backroom staff this season.
